The chase ended about 2.5 miles from our house, which was about halfway through my bus-ride to the university. The location of the original carjacking (Westchester Lagoon) was about another 5 miles further away, on the west side of town, near the inlet.
This story, along with a few other morbid tales, made the electronic front page of the Anchorage Daily News a bit darker this morning than it was a few days ago. (Moose Alert!) But, they still managed to fit this story into the Top 5:
'The average horse produces 35 or 40 pounds of a manure a day, according to a variety of sources. So this is the work of a lot of animals. "It's at least a 10-horse stable," guessed Brackbill, who said he used to clean stalls at a racetrack when he was a little boy.'

The story about the police chase and machete murders is on CNN.com and other national news sources today. The guy sounds like a nut...guess that's what can happen to some people when they don't get enough hours of daylight!
Here's the full story and timeline:

My first introduction to this story was seeing all those police cars on the road during my morning commute. As I read the first details, I found myself thinking about how close this had come to my family. It amazes me that this whole thing started 40 miles to our northeast, up in Palmer, and that upon killing his father and wounding his step-mom-to-be, Mr. Rogers actually drove toward the largest city in the state, rather than away from it. He clearly didn't mind getting caught.
I also find myself feeling selfishly thankful that he didn't simply ditch his father's truck as soon as he reached Anchorage, but kept driving about 10 more miles into the city. We're just a few miles from the NE city limits, and the only way into town from the north (the Glenn Hwy) passes just 0.7 miles from our apartment. I shudder to think what could've happened if he'd been an hour later that morning.
